The cattle enterprise complements the arable side of the business by turning straw into dung and utilising man power through the quieter winter months.

Arable

We grow winter barley for seed and feed, winter oilseed rape for domestic crushing, winter wheat for feed and distilling and spring barley for malting and seed. Since we cover a large area of ground we grow these crops to give us a large harvest window, so the combine gets an early start and can keep cutting right through the season. The winter barley not only gives us an early start with the combine it allows us to clear ground ready for getting the next year’s crop of oilseed rape in the ground. This gives it the best possible start to realise its yield potential.

By growing seed crops of winter and spring barley, we can also get a better price for the product, while also giving us a chance to try new varieties on the farm to see if they work for us. We strive to always be at the top of our game, never sacrificing quality for output, even in a bad year.

More information on the arable side of the business can be found on our Contract Farming page.

Livestock

We have a large beef enterprise on the farm where we buy in and finish approximately 400 head of cattle per year.

This is mainly U-grade limousin crosses, supplying 2 butchers every week with cattle. The butcher shops we supply are Fell & Sharpe at Whitburn and Forsyths of Peebles. Any extra cattle that the butchers do not need go either to St. Boswells Market in the Borders or to ABP at Perth.

We feed the cattle with mainly home grown products like silage, barley and straw, with the only bought in feeding being brewers’ dark grains for protein.

Haulage

We also have our artic on the road with a bulk tipper and flat trailer moving most of our products in and out of the farm. We also buy and sell a lot of straw throughout the year and move it with the lorry to farmers who need it. The lorry is available for general haulage work at quieter times of the year. Please get in touch if you require an extra lorry to assist you with your haulage needs.

Lime Spreading

We run a contract lime spreading service, supplying and spreading lime. Having our own lorry allows us to get lime into farms when others may be struggling with haulage, especially in the busy summer months. We also spread fibrephos as well. Please get in touch for a competitive quote.
